Austrian hill climber
Gerold Eckl talks below about what must be one of very few Rampsides in Austria!
"It was imported new by the GM dealership in Vienna, but was licensed [for the] first time on May 20, 1966. Then it was used for some years by the dealership itself; apparently it was impossible to sell it (it must have had an astronomic price tag).
I got it in 1985 without engine, transmission and most trim, and had a hard time fixing it. I have a GM service block (164 CID, with correct dipstick), '64 car diff with 3.89 gears and a '65 four-speed in it now, after several unlucky experiments.
The vehicle is—and always was—bright red. It was at least partially repainted when I got it, and I painted it again a long time ago. I added a bright yellow stripe and painted the bumpers silver instead of white to match the Belair hubcaps I used then.
Apart from this, the truck is in fairly complete original condition. A few missing pieces (jack , some trim) were replaced with original parts collected on several trips to the Southwest.
I used it regularly from 1990 until 1997, but now some serious bodywork is necessary again to keep it on the road. You might have noticed that the VIN and engine number (T1016V) do not indicate an export model, but apparently it had got a metric speedo. (I must check how many km it shows; I am not sure now, I think 130 km/h.)"
Gerold also knows of a '65 Greenbrier that a friend (also in Vienna) owns. As soon as he gets some more info on it, I will be sure to add it to the '65 Greenbrier registry. Gerold said the Greenbrier is still in use today and has had the same owner for the last 20 years.
